Power went out. Is my vial in the fridge ruined?

Updated 2026-05-04

Probably fine. A closed fridge holds safe temperatures for about 4 hours and a closed freezer for about 24-48 hours. Keep the door shut. Most peptide vials, both unmixed and mixed, also tolerate room temperature for at least 28 days, so a short outage is rarely a problem. If power has been out longer than a day, check the vial for cloudiness, particles, or color change, and call the manufacturer or your pharmacy before using.

IfIf the outage was under 4 hours
Thenthen your vial is fine, keep using it on schedule
IfIf the outage was 4-24 hours
Thenthen keep the door shut and add ice or a frozen gel pack if possible
IfIf the outage was over 24 hours and the vial felt warm
Thenthen call the manufacturer or pharmacy before injecting
IfIf the vial is cloudy, has particles, or changed color
Thenthen do not inject - replace it
Key facts
  • A closed refrigerator holds safe food and drug temperatures for about 4 hours
  • A closed full freezer holds for 48 hours; a half-full freezer for 24 hours
  • Lilly runs tempex.lilly.com for Mounjaro, Zepbound, and Trulicity to give a per-product temperature ruling
  • Most semaglutide and tirzepatide vials are stable at room temperature (up to 86 F or 30 C) for 28 days
  • Reconstituted compounded vials follow the same room-temp rule unless your pharmacy gave you a shorter window
