Who should avoid GHK-Cu?

Updated 2026-05-05

Skip GHK-Cu if you have Wilson's disease or any other copper metabolism disorder, since it adds copper your body cannot clear. Avoid it if you have an active or suspected cancer; GHK-Cu promotes new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) which is helpful for healing but can also feed tumors. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are also on the avoid list because there is no safety data. Anyone under 18 should also wait, and people with anxiety or mood disorders should not rely on GHK-Cu as treatment for those issues.

IfIf you have Wilson's disease, Menkes disease, or any copper handling disorder
Thenthen GHK-Cu is contraindicated, period
IfIf you have a current or suspected cancer
Thenthen avoid GHK-Cu until cleared by oncology, since it stimulates blood vessel growth
IfIf you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Thenthen skip injectable GHK-Cu - there is no safety data in either group
IfIf you have a known copper or metal allergy
Thenthen patch-test a topical copper peptide first; if it reacts, do not inject
Key facts
  • Wilson's disease causes copper to accumulate in the liver, brain, and eyes - extra copper is dangerous
  • Menkes disease is a copper transport disorder where supplementation is more nuanced and must be physician-supervised
  • Active or suspected cancer is a flag because GHK-Cu promotes angiogenesis (new blood vessels) and tumors need blood supply to grow
  • Pediatric (under 18), pregnancy, and breastfeeding use are all unstudied for injectable GHK-Cu
  • Topical GHK-Cu has a much longer safety record than injectable; if you only need skin benefits, topical is better-studied
